I stride with purpose toward the council chamber. Ember, Copper, and Blaze rush to catch up and fall into step beside me. My heart beats faster than a rabbit’s. The Dragon Clan council has finally made their decision. Will they help Bonfire Falls, or will they leave us to burn? While I hope the Dragon Clan will help stop the war while there’s still a town left to save, I’m fearful they’ll decide to do nothing.
I don’t wait to be ushered in. Instead, I shove the door open and stride boldly into the council’s chambers. These people have made me wait long enough. I can’t help but notice many of them, close to half, give me a scornful cold shoulder. It doesn’t bode well for the decision they made.
One of the elders clears her throat.
“The council has reached a decision. We thank you for your patience in what must be a troubling time.”
“That’s an understatement.” I cross my arms over my chest and stare back defiantly. They’ve made their decision. It doesn’t matter if they like me anymore. “So, what is it? Or do I have to wait three more days for you to finally tell me?”
The elders seem rather nonplussed by my attitude, but my male companions are utterly shocked. Ember claps a hand over his mouth and stares at me as if to say, what have you done?
Copper looks from me to the elders, as if one of them will strike me down.
Blaze, on the other hand, lets out a sharp bark of laughter.
“She’s bold. Perhaps you’d better tell her your decision before she unleashes her magic on you.”
The elder’s mouth twitches.
“It is the decision of this council that the Dragon Clan will render aid to Bonfire Falls.”
Despite my earlier bravado, I nearly faint with relief. My parents will be saved. If they’re still alive.
“Thank you.” I don’t know if it’s proper or not, but I offer a deep bow to the Dragon Clan council of elders. “I know this wasn’t an easy decision to make, so thank you.”
“We only want peace.” The elder woman’s mouth stretches into a thin, mirthless smile. “But in order to preserve that peace, we must deal with the violence that ails your fair town. The majority of us agree on this.”
“The majority?” I arch my eyebrow, and then glance at the rest of the council. No wonder so many of them seem angry. “How much of a majority?”
“The council voted seven to six in favor of helping Bonfire Falls.”
My stomach bottoms out as I realize how close my town came to disaster. Seven to six? I hadn’t expected so much resistance. I suppose I’d always assumed the Dragon Clan were somehow chivalrous and would eagerly ride off to battle for a just cause. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
After seeing my town consumed by warfare, I can’t blame the Dragon Clan elders for their hesitation in offering assistance. But what I’d said before, about how neither Sybil nor Flint will be satisfied with Bonfire Falls, was true.
